How Nigerian Brands Should Get Permission to Repost Customer Content
Before reposting a customer’s photo or video, ask for clear permission and record what the customer approved. A tag, mention or public post is not automatically permission for a brand to copy the content into its own feed, advert, website or email. State the exact content, channels, edits, credit and time period, then wait for an affirmative reply.
This guide gives Nigerian brands a practical permission workflow. It is general information, not legal advice. Ask a qualified professional about a disputed work, paid licence, minor or high-value campaign.
Public content still has an owner
The World Intellectual Property Organization explains that work published online, including on social platforms, is not automatically in the public domain. Its current copyright guidance says authorisation is generally needed before using protected work, subject to applicable licences, limitations and exceptions.
Nigeria’s current framework is the Copyright Act, 2022, which commenced on 17 March 2023. The Nigerian Copyright Commission provides the Act and copyright advisory services. Permission is a practical way to make the intended use clear, but complex rights questions require legal review.
Credit and permission solve different problems. Credit identifies the creator. Permission authorises the agreed use. Giving credit after copying a photograph does not automatically cure a missing authorisation.
Confirm who can grant permission
The person who posted the content may not own every element in it. A customer could have hired a photographer, used a third party’s illustration, included music or filmed another person. Ask a simple ownership question before discussing reposting:
“Did you create this photo or video, and do you have authority to let us use it?”
If the answer is uncertain, stop. Ask the customer to connect you with the creator or provide evidence of the relevant licence. Do not pressure the customer into making a legal promise they do not understand.
Write a request that names the proposed use
A vague message such as “Can we share this?” leaves important questions unanswered. Use a short request that covers scope.
Hello, Ada. We like the photo of our green serving bowl that you posted on 20 October. May Cloutingo Home use that specific photo in one Instagram feed post and one Story during November 2026? We would crop it to a square and add a short product caption. We will credit your account as @example. Please reply “Yes, I approve” if you agree. You can also say no.
The example is hypothetical. Replace every detail with the real content, brand, channel, edit and period. Do not bundle website use, paid advertising and unlimited future use into a casual repost request.
Match the permission to the channel
| Planned use | Permission should address |
|---|---|
| Organic social repost | Named account, platform, post format, credit and permitted edit |
| Website or email | Named page or campaign, duration and whether the content may be resized |
| Paid advertising | Ad channels, territory, period, editing, fee and any creator approval step |
| Printed material | Item, print quantity or campaign, distribution area and production deadline |
A reply approving an Instagram Story does not automatically cover a billboard. When the use changes, request a new approval.

Keep a permission record your team can understand
Save the approval outside a single staff member’s inbox. Your record can be a spreadsheet, rights-management tool or organised folder. For each asset, capture:
- a unique asset reference;
- the original post URL and date;
- the creator’s name and contact route;
- the permission message and affirmative reply;
- approved channels and formats;
- allowed crops, captions or other edits;
- credit wording;
- start and end dates, if any; and
- where the brand eventually used the asset.
Restrict access to staff who need it. The log may contain personal information, so do not treat it as a public content calendar.
Get approval for edits that could change meaning
Routine resizing may be acceptable when the permission says so. A heavy crop, colour change, new quotation, voice-over or product claim can alter what the customer appears to endorse. Show the edited version before publication when the change is material.
Do not write a testimonial in the customer’s voice. If the original post says “the colour matches my kitchen,” the brand should not turn it into “the best kitchen product in Nigeria.” Keep any quotation accurate and within the approved context.

Treat music, people and children as separate rights questions
A video may include a song, a performer, a recognisable person or artwork. Permission from the person who uploaded the video may not clear those additional elements. Platform music tools can also have conditions that differ between personal, organic business and advertising use.
Be especially careful with content featuring children. Do not rely on a child’s direct message or casual public tag. Obtain appropriate adult consent and legal guidance for the planned use. If the rights cannot be confirmed, choose another asset.
Respect a refusal or withdrawal request
Make it easy for a customer to say no. A refusal should not affect their purchase or support. If someone later asks you to stop using an asset, check the agreed terms, pause new uses while the request is reviewed and respond promptly. Remove the content when required or when continuing would damage trust.
Record what was removed and where. Deleting one feed post does not remove a scheduled advert, website banner or downloaded sales deck.
Publish only from the approved asset
Store a final approved file and give it the same asset reference as the permission record. Staff should publish from that file, not from a fresh screenshot of the customer’s post. This reduces accidental changes, low-quality crops and use of the wrong version.
After rights are clear, you can plan how the post will be distributed. If paid social proof is part of that plan, first compare the live Cloutingo service catalogue with the platform and metric you intend to support. Purchased engagement does not turn customer content into an endorsement, transfer copyright or guarantee sales. Keep the permission record separate from performance reporting.
Review the current Cloutingo terms before using any service. You can create an account only after the asset is authorised and a current listing fits the campaign.
Use permission as part of good customer care
A respectful repost process is simple: identify the creator, name the exact use, receive a clear yes, save the evidence, approve important edits and publish only within scope. That protects the relationship as well as the content. Start by auditing the customer posts your brand has saved and separate “interesting” from “cleared for use.”
